Off the Shelf: Summer Reading Books for Adults

Hello and happy summer! I hope everyone is enjoying the season and finding time to read some good books! Since this year’s Summer Reading Program theme is Tails and Tales, I wanted to recommend some books about animals for you in this blog post. There are so many to choose from, including heartwarming stories about pets and fascinating information about wild animals – they would make a great addition to your reading list! Of course, we would be happy to recommend even more books, simply stop in and ask!

For anyone participating in our Summer Reading Program Book Bingo, any of these books would fill in the square for “A book about animals” if you haven’t filled it yet. And if you haven’t started your bingo card, you can still pick one up at any library location, or participate online through WTCPL.READSQUARED.COM.  Make sure you return your bingo card by July 31, 2021, to be entered into the prize drawing. We are all Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler
This moving, complex novel is about a family who raised a chimpanzee along with their own children, and the effects that this had on all of them as time goes on.

Fiction:

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
Told from the perspective of a dog named Enzo, this is an inspiring and emotional look at a family and what dogs and humans can learn from each other.

Fiction:

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
We follow the bittersweet and engaging story of circus performers in the 1930s and the animals in their menagerie, including Rosie the elephant.

Nonfiction:

Unlikely Friendships: 47 Remarkable Stories from the Animal Kingdom by Jennifer S. Holland
Heartwarming tales of unlikely animal friends, including a gorilla and kitten, and a hippo and tortoise – with plenty of adorable photos.

Nonfiction:

H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald
A memoir of a falconer and the goshawk she trains while coping with grief that shows the beauty of birds and our relationships with them.

Nonfiction:

Extraordinary Dogs: Stories from Search and Rescue Dogs, Comfort Dogs, and Other Canine Heroes by Liz Stavrinides and John Schlimm
Beautiful collection of stories and photos that tell us about dogs with remarkable jobs and all they do for us.
