Hey there!

As spring waits just around the corner, gardeners’ minds turn toward seeds and soil. Gardens are a wonderful place for children to explore nature in their own yards or community garden plots.

From food to flowers; from reading to math; from science to art, you and the child in your life can learn a lot right in your own backyard or neighborhood. Get dressed to get dirty and get outside with the child in your life!

Here are some books to share with the next generation of green thumbs!

How to Say Hello to a Worm: A First Guide to Outside by Kari Percival

Explore the garden from the point of view of a small child. More a primer on how to appreciate the garden rather than a how-to garden book, How to Say Hello to a Worm invites children to get close and comfortable with the plants and critters in your garden.

Jayden’s Impossible Garden by Melina Mangal; Illustrated by Ken Daley

Jayden sees nature everywhere, even in the middle of the big city. But he doesn’t have his own yard to build a garden in. With the help of a neighbor, Jayden creates a “magical secret fort garden” with recyclable containers in an empty grassy lot. Show the child in your life that, even if you don’t have your own backyard, you can still have a beautiful garden.
