A Literary Landmark dedication & presentation about mystery author and Warren native, Earl Derr BiggersBiggersEarlDerr

Saturday, Sept. 23 at 11 a.m.
Main Library in Warren

The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library will recognize Warren native and mystery author Earl Derr Biggers during Warren’s Homecoming weekend festivities in September.

Learn about some of the factors that shaped Biggers during his early life in Warren and how his Charlie Chan character influenced popular literature at the time. This lecture about Biggers’ life and works will be presented by Jan Vaughn, Warren-Trumbull County Public Library assistant director.

Biggers (1884-1933) was a novelist and playwright born and raised in Warren. He graduated from Warren High School in 1903 and in 1907 from Harvard University. While in high school, he founded “The Cauldron,” a monthly school literary magazine.

Biggers worked as a journalist in Cleveland and Boston before pursuing fiction writing and relocating to New York and eventually California. He is best known for his mystery novels featuring fictional Chinese-Hawaiian detective Charlie Chan. Biggers presented Chan as an intelligent, heroic character at a time when popular literature negatively stereotyped Asians.

Unveiling of Literary Landmark Plaque

The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, in partnership with the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County and the Friends of the Warren Library, applied for and received a “Literary Landmark” designation in honor of Biggers through the American Library Association’s “United For Libraries” division. The Literary Landmarks program was established to encourage the dedication of historic literary sites. The bronze plaque will be displayed inside the Main Library.
